Happily married for 30 years with 4 kids, and three grandchildren (so far) Captain Derek and Brenda decided that the Caribbean would be the perfect place for a fun-filled next chapter in their lives. Prompted by their love of sailing, our “empty nest” and a desire for a lifestyle change they decided to do what we loved. So, leaving behind a successful business and some shocked family and friends, they moved aboard Bella Vita. Derek and Brenda have been sailing for the past 20+ Years. Their adventures have included cruising the U.S. East Coast, the Caribbean and part of the Med. Derek holds a US Coast Guard Masters license with Sailing Endorsement and Brenda, also a captain, has her US Coast Guard OUPV. Both are also open water dive certified and CPR/AED/First Aid certified. About Derek: Derek is a born and raised Southern Gentleman (even though he doesn’t have much of the accent). He has owned successful businesses, coached competitive soccer teams, served on the local YMCA board and believes in giving back to his community. Derek’s knowledge of the local area allows him to adapt your charter to suit your desires – showing you hidden bays and coves as well as hitting all the top US/BVI hot spots. On the surface Derek feels that vacations should be pretty simple; water, beach, a good book and sailing around with a cold drink in your hand. About Brenda: Brenda is a well traveled military brat (Air Force) but ended up in Raleigh, NC where she met Derek. Brenda is a successful business woman, mom and an accomplished cook. Bella Vita offers surprisingly diverse dining, with a culinary variety that includes Southern comfort foods, seafood, down-home fare like dirty rice, shrimp and grits, sweet potatoes, fresh fruits, vegetables and palate pleasing treats. Brenda feels that it’s always special to pause, sit down and share a good meal, whether it’s with the family or a get-together with friends. She is more than happy to meet any dietary needs. You will feel her warm and gracious North Carolina charm the moment you walk on-board.
